View the Networking Conversations course All Personal branding & networking courses →A room full of people you don't know, a name badge on your jumper and the question of what on earth to say first. For most people, networking is not a talent but an ordeal, and that feeling doesn't go away by telling yourself you ought to enjoy it. It goes away once you know what you are doing: which sentence to use, which question comes next and what you send the following morning.
This free online course is the starter for our full Networking conversations. In four chapters you learn how to approach someone you do not know and join a group that is already talking, how to use the conversation funnel and the FORD model to move a conversation from small talk to the heart of the matter, how to ask follow-up questions using listening, summarising and probing without it becoming an interrogation or a sales pitch, and how to keep the contact warm afterwards without being pushy. Each chapter ends with a short knowledge check.
The full course goes on to cover mapping out your own network, setting a networking goal, preparing for an event, first impressions and your posture, your personal pitch, giving and taking, the critical moments in a conversation, choosing where to network and networking on LinkedIn. Would you like to practise that with a trainer present, using the event you are attending shortly as your starting point? Then take a look at the Networking Conversations training course.

IntroductionHow this free course is structured, the four phases of the networking cycle and what you will learn in the four chapters.
1.-
Making contact with someone you don't knowFear of the threshold and the three thoughts behind it, how to spot someone who is open to contact, four opening lines and joining a small group.
2.-
From small talk to the heart of the matterWhat small talk is for, the conversation funnel in four layers, the FORD model and four ways to get a stalled conversation going again.
3.-
Listening, summarising and asking follow-up questionsThe three levels of listening, summarising as a steering tool and four ways of probing without it turning into an interrogation.
4.-
Keeping in touch afterwardsThe three actions in the first 48 hours, the rhythm per network ring and a message with which you reopen a dormant contact.
5.-
Networking in perspectiveNetworking without a sales pitch, the most persistent networking myths and what networking actually delivers.
6.-
Mapping your networkThe concentric network circles, the strength of weak ties and your own network map, with its blind spots in it.
7.-
Setting your networking goalFrom a vague wish to a SMART networking goal, a goal for each conversation and sharpening your networking request.
8.-
Preparing for networking eventsHomework in advance, practical and mental preparation, and working with a networking buddy.
9.-
The first impressionThe first few seconds, open body language, your voice as your calling card and projecting what you want to project.
10.-
Your personal pitchThe pitch as a response to the other person, your core message in one sentence and practising for different situations.
11.-
Two-way trafficGive and take, what you have to offer and what you can mean to each other.
12.-
Critical moments in the conversationThe turning points in the four phases, recognising the moment to ask, asking without begging and closing with a next step.
13.-
Networking venues and networking partnersTypes of networking venues, choosing your networking partners and a networking mix that fits your goal.
14.-
Networking on LinkedInYour profile, connection requests with context, joining the conversation in your field and the step from online to offline.
That is the difference with a pdf: there is someone standing in front of the class who answers your questions and thinks along with your own situation.
I found the 'Interview Techniques' course to be good. Nothing to fault. It was also good that Job called beforehand for a short preliminary discussion. You don't see that very often. A very worthwhile course. It also had a strong element of repetition. Plenty of variety, including between theory and practice. Learned a lot, and applied it straight away during the course. And I think these learnings will also help me further when conducting interviews.
We took the Outlook, Teams and OneNote course with Roy Nieuwenhuijzen. Good content, and a few days before the course he got in touch with me (coordinator of the course, head of the secretariat). Pleasant that you can fill in the day itself as needed. The booklet for reference is rather dated, but apparently there is little up-to-date material to be found.
In May 2024 I took the WordPress course. As an IT enthusiast with broad but not necessarily deep knowledge, I wanted to know more about WordPress. How do you install everything and how do you start building a website. This course is extremely well suited to that. From the outset you learn in 3 days how to start a website and what to look out for. I now have a solid basis for getting to work with WordPress and I know my way around the various options. The course is recommended for anyone who wants to learn in three days what WordPress can do and how to apply it.
