In conversations with colleagues, clients or your team: do you want to get to the heart of the matter, stay in control and bring the other person with you? With the right conversation techniques, you consciously steer every conversation towards your objective, even when emotions run high or resistance arises.
In the Conversation Techniques course you work on the skills you need to conduct conversations purposefully. You learn how to get to the heart of the matter, how to keep the conversation on track when emotions run high and how to make your point without losing sight of the other person.
What the Communication Skills course is all about how you communicate, the focus here is on what you want to achieve in a conversation and how to work towards that deliberately. You will gain insight into the communication process, into verbal, non-verbal and paralinguistic signals, and into what is at play beneath the surface of a conversation. You will use McClelland's iceberg theory as a framework for better interpreting behaviour, beliefs and emotions.
The course is mainly practical in its set-up. You practise conversational techniques, simulate recognisable situations and receive immediate feedback. You are also introduced to a number of models that help you understand conversations better and influence them more effectively. In this way you build up a set of techniques that you can apply straight away in your own working practice.
During this course you will work on the following topics:
After this course you are aware of your own qualities and pitfalls, and you know what impact they have on a conversation. You steer conversations towards the goal you have in mind, and you keep or regain control when necessary.
You recognise resistance in yourself and in the other person, and you know how to deal with it constructively. You also listen more effectively, with an eye for the other person's experience and frame of reference.
You see through your own communication patterns and their effect on others, you use targeted conversation techniques to achieve your objective, you stay in control even when emotions or resistance run high, you listen more closely, ask better follow-up questions and prevent misunderstandings, and you handle difficult conversations. Such as feedback or bad-news conversations. With more calm and clarity.
This course is suitable for anyone who regularly holds conversations and wants to become more effective at them. You will probably recognise yourself in one or more of these points:
You want to get more out of your questioning technique, you want to listen better to the other person's expectations and interests, you want to gain insight into mutual influence during conversations, you are looking for techniques for specific conversation situations, such as a bad-news conversation, a confrontation or a feedback moment, you want a conversation to run smoothly, even when emotions run high, you want to communicate more clearly and avoid misunderstandings.
Whether you are a manager, adviser, project worker or a professional in another role: if conversations are an important part of your work, this course is a good fit.
During this course the focus is on doing is central. You practise with recognisable conversation situations from your own working practice, receive immediate feedback and get to work with techniques you can apply straight away.
The structure is varied:
We work in a small group of no more than eight participants, so that there is room for personal attention and everyone gets enough time to practise. The atmosphere is safe and positive: making mistakes is allowed, because that is what you learn most from.
You do not need any specific prior knowledge. It does help if you regularly have conversations in your work or private life and are keen to practise actively. An open attitude and a willingness to look at your own communication will help you most.

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.
Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.
The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.
When would you like to start?
At Learnit you will always find a course that takes you further. From (technical) IT skills to communication or personal leadership. You can also choose the training format that suits you best: a classroom course, a tailor-made course at your own office, an online course or an e-learning. We have the right course and the right format for everyone. Because learning in the way that suits you best delivers the best results.
Personal attention and a pleasant atmosphere. Whether you take a course with us, at your office or on your own PC, we make sure you feel at home enough to push your boundaries.
New opportunities arise when you get moving. Stay sharp. Keep taking new steps. We encourage you to take the plunge and really go for it.
Discover something new. Build on your strengths. And choose your own path. We help you grow with training courses and learning formats that genuinely suit you.
We always think in terms of possibilities and win-win. And every day we work on new solutions for tomorrow. By offering training courses that leave you well prepared for the future.
We don't make empty promises. What we do offer is quality, knowledge and experience. A broad range of courses, made possible by our inspired staff and trainers.
We listen to what matters to you. To what you need. Because that is where our solution, our tailored approach, begins. Understanding each other properly and communicating clearly: that is what we believe in.
Taking a training course at Learnit means learning together. Together with your experienced trainer, together with your course group or together with your colleagues. And whether you take the training at home, at your office or at one of our training locations, we are always available to help you. To share our knowledge with you in a way that is genuinely useful to you. Getting further together through personal attention and understanding each other well; that is what we believe in.
Learning theory from a book that you can then hardly use in your work? Not at Learnit! Whichever training you take with us, you can put it to use at your workplace straight away. Because of the unique learning objectives you set together with the trainer at the start of the training. Because of the alternation between theory and (interactive) practical assignments. And by bringing the challenges you face in your daily work along to the training.

Conversation Techniques course reviews - Average score 8.5 from 79 reviews
“Good, practical course.”
E. Fokkinga - Ausnutria Operations B.V.- Conversation Techniques
“I really enjoyed this course. The trainer had prepared thoroughly by calling beforehand and asking detailed questions about my personal learning objectives. These were then incorporated into the programme. I learned a great deal and received well-produced course materials. Highly recommended!”
M. van der Burght, Gemeente Arnhem - Conversation Techniques
“Practising the group conversations gives good insight into what works and what the practical pitfalls are.”
D. van Haard, Gemeente Arnhem - Conversation Techniques
“The course material was expertly alternated with practical exercises. The trainer conveys the material to the participants in a professional and enthusiastic way. Because of the small number of participants, everyone had plenty of opportunity to take part. A course I would recommend.”
J. Roosenboom, Ministerie van Economische Zaken (EZ)- Conversation Techniques
“Despite its short duration, this course answered my question exactly. There was ample room for practice, relevant input and materials from the trainer, and it was delivered in a particularly pleasant atmosphere. A great deal of attention was paid to tailoring it to the participants' wishes, without losing direction. That makes the course itself an example of good conversation techniques/communication.”
G. de Boer, ORETC - Conversation Techniques
“I took the course on 15 and 29 March 2012 in The Hague. A very good course with a great many exercises. The course material was well and comprehensibly worked out. It was a pleasant course. I learned a lot from it. The location was also very easy to reach. I have already scheduled my next course.”
R. Landman, ECT- Conversation Techniques
"The content is instructive, but the trainer also makes it usable. With the course material alone you would certainly gain the knowledge, but to apply it you need guidance. Useful material that really benefits you and helps you find out how you come across and how you want to come across. Our trainer was excellent and listened to us in order to address our concerns."
- Conversation Techniques
“It is an instructive course. The information you receive suits you as a person. During the lessons this is further refined to what you need. After the course you become more aware of what you are doing and of what is said during a conversation.”
A. Kool, Luba Personele Diensten - Conversation Techniques
“A good impression of the course. It is a course with plenty of practical exercises.”
L. de Heer, UNET - Conversation Techniques
“The course was well structured and varied. Theory and practical, realistic exercises were so well matched that there were no dull moments and it remained engaging throughout. The course was given by a professional, skilled trainer who was nevertheless not preachy and dared to make herself vulnerable, without losing control of the group. She gave very constructive criticism, which kept motivation high. The use of audio support, models and role-play situations is very good. All in all, the course is very good for becoming aware of exactly what you do in conversations and what you could develop or change. You quickly become aware of your strengths and weaknesses.”
L. Buitenhuis - Conversation Techniques
"I found it a worthwhile course. Easy to put into practice."
- Conversation Techniques
“Excellent course, a good combination of theory and practice with instructive practical assignments. The trainer made it great fun.”
N. Lagerberg, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK) FMHaaglanden - Conversation Techniques

“Instructive, interesting.”
J. van Oosten, Zorg en Zekerheid- Conversation Techniques
"It was a thoroughly enjoyable course. The training was delivered with great enthusiasm and it was a pleasant setting. We were in a group of 3 participants, which worked very well for me. As a result, there was more scope to respond to your needs and provide personal guidance. We were able to cover a lot of topics. It was a good combination of theory and practice."
- Conversation Techniques
“I had initially signed up for a different course (Interview Techniques). During a conversation with Learnit Training, it turned out that this course also matched my needs well. They had judged that correctly. We were a small group, which meant the course could be tailored closely to our learning objectives. The trainer was very flexible; she adapted to our answers to questions. You could feel that she wanted to help you move forward. In my view she has a great deal of knowledge and expertise. I thoroughly enjoyed her sessions; she inspired me.”
A. Wösten, Stichting Icare - Conversation Techniques
“An interesting and highly applicable course in the field of communication. A good refresher and made very applicable by the trainer, Job.”
J. Janssen - Nederlandse Publieke Omroep - Conversation Techniques
"The Learnit course above all made me aware of the differences between good and less good ways of communicating and how this leads to behavioural change. This has a positive influence on and effect on customer friendliness, service to others and ultimately on overall cooperation and improved relationships."

S.J.G. Bieman, Gemeente Alkmaar - Conversation Techniques course
“Initially I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the conversation techniques course, as it is a broad concept. Thanks to the input I could bring in myself, the telephone and email contact with the trainer beforehand and the theory from the trainer, it turned into two very instructive, productive training days.”
Simone van der Kooij, Koetsveldschool- Conversation Techniques
“The basic skills of conversation technique. Explained in a compact way. And practised intensively straight away in a small group. You really do get your turn. You take skills away from this course that you can apply immediately.”
H. Schoordijk, Provincie Noord-Holland- Conversation Techniques
“This course was very instructive. The lines of communication with Learnit are very short, excellent.”

Y.L. Tuyt, Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK)- Conversation techniques

C. Cazier, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK) FMHaaglanden- Conversation Techniques
“Excellent course that not only increases your personal skills, but also the team spirit between you and your colleagues.”
J. Beijersbergen, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK) FMHaaglanden- Conversation Techniques
“The course is definitely to be recommended. Beforehand you can pass on your learning objectives during a brief telephone conversation with the trainer. All your objectives are then covered. The trainer teaches in a very enjoyable way, with structure but without it feeling imposed in any way. Input from participants is greatly appreciated. Presenting in front of the camera seems daunting at first, but it is very instructive and ultimately great fun too. As well as being very instructive and readily applicable, I also found the days very enjoyable. A shame that it is over. Fortunately I still have my course material with my notes, and the important points are still firmly in my head.”
G.T. Huitema, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK) - Conversation Techniques
“The course gives you insight into your own communication style. Thanks to the group dynamics you also learn things from others, which is very pleasant. Through role plays you practise situations in which you previously got stuck. With the knowledge from this course you go into conversations with more confidence.”
S. Berswerda - Conversation Techniques
“' An instructive and interesting course, in which you learn how to open a conversation, for example a bad news conversation.'”
H.J. Kroon. DZB Leiden - Conversation Techniques
“A to-the-point training course in which the differences between participants regarding conducting conversations were addressed very well. Each participant gained their own insights and learning objectives, and sharing those insights also proved interesting for everyone. I thought a strong point was the use of models, with participants being asked to supply the content. This worked far better than presenting a model with often abstract concepts that then have to sink in and subsequently be put into practice/translated in an exercise.”
R. Stap, Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland- Conversation Techniques
“An organisation that wants to teach a way of communicating in an open and honest manner without damaging people. I found it very pleasant.”
A. van der Hilt, Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) FMHaaglanden- Conversation Techniques
“It is an excellent course with many practical assignments. You are given plenty of tools for steering a conversation as effectively as possible.”
H. vom Hofe, PCBO- Conversation Techniques
"Very good impression, experienced trainer and a good lunch"
- Conversation Techniques
"An enjoyable and practically oriented course, tailored exactly to our needs. Practising conversations was very worthwhile. The pleasant, engaged trainer created a personal atmosphere, so that all participants felt free to take an active part and ask questions. Plenty of tips and tricks were covered that we can apply straight away. In short, an enjoyable and instructive day!"
- Conversation Techniques
"'Nice small group, very good that there was plenty of opportunity to practise conversations. Lots of recognisable real-life situations from the trainer.'"
- Conversation Techniques
“Very enjoyable course, extremely instructive. I was lucky to end up in a nice group, which does make a difference.”
E. Lammertink, Vestia - Conversation Techniques
“It is a tailor-made course and highly applicable in practice!”
D. Kolstee, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK) FMHaaglanden – Conversation Techniques
"Do you run into difficulties when it comes to communication? And do you want to develop yourself further in this area, so that you feel stronger in certain situations? Then the Conversation Techniques course is the right one. You learn to deal with situations you find difficult and gain new insights into how best to communicate. It gave me a lot of new and valuable insights."
- Conversation Techniques
“The course was focused on practice, which made it very good. Everything else was well organised too and I can certainly recommend this course!”
Ruud Tummers, T-Mobile Netherlands B.V.- Conversation Techniques
"In this course I learned to analyse why conversations go the way they do. What does a conversation trigger in me, how do I then react, how would I like to react and how can I go about that? What might a conversation trigger in the other person and how can I deal with that? A lot of attention was paid to personal learning objectives. As a result, the content of the course matched what I wanted to achieve well."
- Conversation Techniques
"Recommended for everyone."
- Conversation Techniques
“Good atmosphere, good value for money, learned a lot. The theory is clear, and the role plays and exercises tie in with it well. You gain many new insights in a playful way. I am much more aware of communication and apply the techniques!”
N. Middelhoven - Conversation Techniques
“I thought the course was good and, above all, useful and instructive. Even though I am not feeling great at the moment and am not quite myself, I still got a lot out of it. Most people dread role-plays, but once you are over the 'fear', doing a role-play is great fun and very instructive.”
M. Mulder, Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) FMHaaglanden – Conversation Techniques
“Good, clear course in which I learned a lot of things that I can definitely apply in practice!”
J. Wismans, Hendrik Pierson College- Conversation Techniques
"Over the past few months we at FMHaaglanden have been inundated with courses and training. It took me a lot of effort to get motivated again for this course. Once there, I was carried along by the trainers' enthusiasm, which made it an instructive course that flew by as well!"

Birgitta Blank, Stichting Het Rijnlands Lyceum, European School The Hague - Conversation Techniques
“Comprehensive course, ample time for all the topics, and the participants' wishes are properly listened to instead of following a standard programme. Also enough breaks in between, so that concentration is maintained.”
J. Glas - Allnamics Geotechnical Experts B.V.- Conversation Techniques
