Anyone who opens ChatGPT sees an empty input field and nothing else. The tool can do a great deal, but it does not tell you what it can do, and it does not mention it when it gets things wrong either. That is why some users drop out again after two weeks: the answers come quickly enough, but they are not usable enough to base your work on.

This free online course is the starter for our full ChatGPT. In four chapters you learn to build up an instruction from five fixed building blocks, to steer an answer in small rounds, to judge which data does and does not belong in an input field, and to check the result in the five places where things tend to go wrong. It is about working methods that last, not about buttons that will be somewhere else next year. Each chapter ends with a short knowledge check.

The full training course goes on to cover how a language model works under the bonnet, which model to choose for which task, the working environment with instructions and memory, advanced prompting techniques, creating texts and images, having documents and spreadsheets analysed, working with speech, the AI Act and copyright, and your own AI work plan. Would you like to cover those topics with an experienced trainer present, and with your own work on the table? Then have a look at the ChatGPT training course.

Chapters 1 to 3 in a single PDF, with a worksheet and cheat sheet.

Contents:

  • 0.-

    Introduction
How this free course is structured and what you learn in the four chapters.
  • 1.-

The five building blocks of a good prompt
Role, task, context, format and constraints: where you take the choice out of the model's hands, and the five mistakes everyone makes at the start.
  • 2.-

    Steering until it is usable
Working in rounds instead of in one perfect instruction, one change per round, and how to bring back a conversation that has drifted off.
  • 3.-

What to enter and what not to enter
Where your input goes, when something counts as personal data, which data should never go in and how to make a text ready to paste.
  • 4.-

    Checking the output
Why a language model makes things up without blinking, the signals that give it away and the five categories you always check.
  • 5.-

    How a language model works
Predicting the next word, what a model is trained on and how a raw language model becomes a chat assistant.
  • 6.-

Choosing the right model for each task
How models differ from one another, when a reasoning model pays off and how ChatGPT compares with other assistants.
  • 7.-

The working environment: instructions, memory and projects
Managing conversations, recording fixed preferences once, working with projects and building your own GPT.
  • 8.-

    Applications in your daily work
Taking stock of your own tasks, having your thinking supported and deciding where the human stays in the loop.
  • 9.-

    Advanced prompting techniques
Sending examples along, breaking instructions into chains, templates for recurring work and having the model improve your own prompt.
  • 10.-

    Creating text and images
Writing from scratch, diverging and converging, summarising in stages, recording your own style profile and adding images to your text.
  • 11.-

    Having documents and figures analysed
Uploading a file and getting answers out of it, having images read and moving from analysis to end product.
  • 12.-

    Working with voice
Dictating instead of typing, voice mode and turning meetings into a report with action points.
  • 13.-

    The AI Act and copyright
What the law asks of users, transparency about AI content and how copyright relates to generated work.
  • 14.-

Agreements and your own AI work plan
Usage agreements within your team, three tasks to start with, building a prompt library and keeping up to date.

The trainers who deliver this course

That is the difference with a pdf: there is someone standing in front of the class who answers your questions and thinks along with your own situation.

What participants say about Learnit

I found the 'Interview Techniques' course to be good. Nothing to fault. It was also good that Job called beforehand for a short preliminary discussion. You don't see that very often. A very worthwhile course. It also had a strong element of repetition. Plenty of variety, including between theory and practice. Learned a lot, and applied it straight away during the course. And I think these learnings will also help me further when conducting interviews.

We took the Outlook, Teams and OneNote course with Roy Nieuwenhuijzen. Good content, and a few days before the course he got in touch with me (coordinator of the course, head of the secretariat). Pleasant that you can fill in the day itself as needed. The booklet for reference is rather dated, but apparently there is little up-to-date material to be found.

In May 2024 I took the WordPress course. As an IT enthusiast with broad but not necessarily deep knowledge, I wanted to know more about WordPress. How do you install everything and how do you start building a website. This course is extremely well suited to that. From the outset you learn in 3 days how to start a website and what to look out for. I now have a solid basis for getting to work with WordPress and I know my way around the various options. The course is recommended for anyone who wants to learn in three days what WordPress can do and how to apply it.
