In this programme you combine a solid foundation in leadership with the depth of coaching conversations. You learn to provide direction while leaving space, so that your team grows in ownership and you grow in your role.

Description

In this course you build a solid foundation in your role as a manager and then go deeper into coaching leadership. You work on positioning, clear communication and managing behaviour and results. You then learn how to hold coaching conversations that encourage ownership and development among your staff.

You practise with practical situations from your own work, such as giving feedback, holding difficult conversations, delegating and dealing with resistance. You gain insight into your own style and its effect on your team. You also work on coaching skills such as listening, probing, reflecting and confronting with respect.

By the end of the programme you combine clear direction with a coaching approach. You know when to direct, when to coach and how to leave room for growth without losing control.

Topics

  • The role and positioning of the manager
  • Communication, expectations and assertiveness
  • Steering on behaviour and results
  • Giving feedback and holding difficult conversations
  • Motivating and encouraging ownership
  • Delegating without micromanaging
  • Dealing with change and resilience
  • Coaching leadership: balancing direction and space
  • Coaching skills: listening, summarising, probing, reflecting
  • The structure of a coaching conversation
  • Talents, motivations and development conversations
  • Feedforward and addressing behaviour
  • Dealing with resistance, emotions and defensive reactions
  • Working with your own cases from your team

Result

After this programme you will be more assured in your role as a manager and will know how to provide direction without losing connection. You communicate more clearly, make unambiguous agreements and address people on their behaviour and results.

You hold difficult conversations with more confidence and use feedback as an instrument for growth. You also master the basics of coaching leadership: you listen at different levels, ask good questions and hold conversations with a clear structure.

You will know how to encourage ownership among your staff without solving everything yourself. You will recognise when coaching is appropriate and when direction is needed, and you will be able to switch smoothly between the two roles.

Target audience

This course is intended for managers who want to strengthen their foundation and add a coaching style to the way they lead. You recognise yourself in the need for clarity and space: you want to manage for results while allowing your staff to grow in ownership.

Whether you have just moved up into a management role or have been leading a team for some time, you will gain practical tools to stand your ground more firmly and hold conversations that actually deliver results.

Teaching method

You work with practical exercises in which recognisable situations are simulated. You receive feedback on your behaviour and its effect, with room for reflection and deeper exploration. You actively practise coaching skills, so that you strengthen ownership and growth in your team.

You apply the theory directly in practice. Considerable attention is paid to your own learning objectives and cases from your daily work, so that you can use what you have learned straight away.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. It helps if you already hold a management role or will start one soon, so that you can link the material directly to situations from your own practice.

The course is suitable for managers who want to strengthen their foundations and add a coaching style to their leadership. Think of new managers, team leaders and managers who want to give direction while leaving room for development. No specific prior knowledge is required. It does help if you already hold a management role or will start one soon.

The course covers the core of managing and coaching. Days 1 and 2 focus on your role, communication, steering on behaviour, feedback, motivating and delegating. Days 3 and 4 go deeper into coaching skills: listening, probing, conversation structure, encouraging ownership and dealing with resistance. You practise with situations from your own working life, so you apply the theory in your team straight away.

Directive leadership focuses on providing clarity, making agreements and monitoring results. Coaching leadership encourages ownership by asking questions, listening and allowing staff to arrive at solutions themselves. In this programme you learn to master both styles and to switch deliberately between giving direction and leaving room, depending on the situation and the person.

The difference lies in practising your own behaviour with guidance. Books and e-learning explain models, but they do not give you feedback on how you come across in a difficult conversation. In this classroom programme you work with recognisable real-life situations and cases from your own team. You practise skills such as listening at different levels, probing, summarising, using silence and confronting with respect. A trainer and fellow participants mirror your behaviour and its effect. You also gain insight into patterns such as your tendency to rescue, which you rarely discover through self-study. You can read theory, but conversation skills and positioning are developed by doing, reflecting and adjusting. If you want to change your behaviour and not just increase your knowledge, classroom learning is more effective.

Yes, in fact that is often exactly when a coaching style is effective. With experienced staff, directing on content usually backfires, because they know their field better than you do. Coaching leadership focuses on the process: sharpening goals, exploring options and increasing ownership. On days 3 and 4 of this programme you will practise skills such as probing, summarising, using silence and confronting with respect. These are precisely the interventions that allow you to challenge senior staff without overruling their expertise. You will also learn when coaching is not appropriate, for example when you have to make the call yourself or when a performance issue calls for direct guidance. So you stay in control of results while leaving room for their professional autonomy.

In terms of depth, this programme sits between a short leadership seminar and a full Management Development programme. An MD programme usually lasts six to twelve months and also covers strategy, finance and organisational development. This programme focuses specifically on behaviour in the role: positioning, communication, managing, feedback, coaching conversations and encouraging ownership. Compared with an individual coaching trajectory, here you work in a classroom group, which makes it possible to practise with recognisable real-life situations and receive direct feedback from fellow participants. Personal coaching goes deeper into your individual patterns, but lacks that practice context. Choose this programme if you want to build and practise skills. Choose an MD programme for broad management knowledge and individual coaching for in-depth personal reflection.

A coaching manager steers on results and development at the same time. You have a hierarchical relationship with your employee and remain ultimately responsible for agreements, performance and addressing behaviour. An internal coach works without that hierarchical line and focuses purely on the coachee's reflection and development. In this programme you learn to handle that dual role consciously: switching between directing and coaching, knowing when to hold a coaching conversation and when to make a decision. On day 3 you explicitly explore the pitfalls, such as becoming too soft or taking over your employee's problems. You learn to turn your urge to rescue into behaviour that strengthens ownership. For more serious personal issues, you learn to recognise when referral to a coach or confidential adviser is more appropriate.
