You build a solid foundation as a manager. You get a grip on your role, learn to switch between steering and letting go depending on the situation, and develop a coaching style that strengthens ownership within your team.

Description

In this course you build a solid foundation under your role as a manager and go deeper into two important styles: situational and coaching leadership.

You start with the basics. You consider your role, your position within the team and the way you communicate. You work on expressing expectations, steering on behaviour and results, holding difficult conversations and delegating tasks. Motivation, ownership and resilience in times of change are also covered.

After that you explore the situational leadership model. You get to know the four styles, learn to recognise development levels in employees and practise switching between instructing, coaching, supporting and delegating. This helps you tailor your approach to what a situation or employee needs.

The final part focuses on coaching leadership. You practise listening, summarising, asking follow-up questions and holding a structured coaching conversation. You learn how to increase ownership without taking over, how to use feedback as a development tool and how to deal with resistance, emotions and avoidance behaviour.

You work throughout with your own cases and situations from your daily practice, so you can apply what you have learned directly in your team.

  • The role and positioning of the manager
  • Communication, expectations and assertiveness
  • Steering on behaviour, agreements and results
  • Giving feedback and holding difficult conversations

Result

After this programme you have a clearer overview of your role and responsibilities as a manager. You conduct conversations more clearly and calmly, and you switch consciously between directing, aligning and coaching. You know how to increase ownership within your team without losing control.

  • You position yourself clearly in your role and make agreements that you follow up.
  • You adapt your style to the task and to your employee's level of development.
  • You hold coaching conversations with a clear structure and a concrete outcome.
  • You give feedback that lands and address behaviour without damaging the relationship.
  • You deal constructively with resistance, emotions and difficult situations.
  • You can substantiate the choices you make in your day-to-day leadership and are more consistent in your approach.

Target audience

This course is intended for managers who want to deepen and strengthen their skills. You work with a variety of teams and are looking for a coherent programme in which you learn to switch between directing, aligning and coaching.

Teaching method

We work from practice with a varied approach. You bring in your own situations and cases and reflect on what is going on within your team. Short explanations alternate with exercises, reflection and immediate application. This way you translate insights straight into your own work and arrive at concrete actions you can put to use in practice.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge. Some basic insight into leadership helps, but is not a requirement. Anyone who wants to develop in situational and coaching leadership is welcome.

Comments

What others say about this course

  • “An extremely instructive and enjoyable course! You can apply what you have learned in your work straight away.”

    J. van Horssen - Biblionet Groningen - Managing Volunteers

  • “The content was very good and met my expectations. The level of professionalism was high and the trainer also adapted the course to our wishes. The pace of the lessons, breaks and so on were decided in consultation with the participants. The trainer is very experienced and has an excellent command of the material. She tailored the programme entirely to where we were. For every topic we wanted to cover, she had the theory ready straight away. She had us practise a great deal, which is very good. That is how you learn!”

  • "Managing volunteers is an interesting course in which 'volunteers' as a concept does not necessarily come up. That doesn't matter, because the skills learned are far more broadly applicable than just to volunteers. The course is mainly about communication and interaction with people. The course provided a great deal of insight into holding good conversations, giving feedback and not avoiding difficult conversations."

Frequently asked questions

The course covers three core themes: leadership as a foundation (role, communication, steering on behaviour, feedback, delegating), situational leadership (recognising four styles and development levels) and coaching leadership (coaching skills, conversation structure and increasing ownership). You practise with your own cases and learn to switch consciously between directing, adjusting and coaching in your day-to-day practice.

The course is suitable for managers who want to deepen their skills and learn to switch between directing, aligning and coaching. No specific prior knowledge is required. A basic understanding of leadership helps, but is not compulsory. The programme is well suited to team leaders, managers and coordinators who work with diverse teams and want to make more conscious choices in their day-to-day role.

Situational leadership and coaching leadership are two different approaches that complement each other. With situational leadership you switch between four styles (instructing, coaching, supporting and delegating) based on the task maturity of your employee. You adapt your style to what the situation and the person need at that moment. Coaching leadership goes a layer deeper: you guide employees in their development using skills such as listening at different levels, asking follow-up questions, summarising and confronting with respect. You work on ownership and turn your urge to rescue into helpful behaviour. Both are covered in this programme, because good leadership requires you to know when to direct, when to support and when to coach. Day 3 deals with switching between styles, days 4 and 5 go deeper into coaching conversations.

The difference lies mainly in practice and feedback. During these five classroom days you bring in your own cases and practise conversations with the trainer and other managers. You receive direct feedback on your communication style, the way you address people and how you switch between styles. You will not get that from a book or a podcast. Self-study works well for theory, for example the situational leadership model or coaching skills such as LSD (listening, summarising, asking further questions). For actually changing your behaviour in difficult conversations, dealing with resistance or delegating without micromanaging, practising in a group is more effective. Choose this programme if you want to work actively on your own practice and value the chance to exchange ideas with other managers about familiar situations.

An MBA module or academic programme focuses mainly on leadership theory, strategy and organisational issues, often using cases from large companies. This programme works the other way round: you start with your own practice and practise concrete skills for the day-to-day management of a team. The content is practical, with models such as situational leadership (four styles: directing, coaching, supporting, delegating) and coaching skills such as LSD (listening, summarising, probing), feedback and conversation structure. You bring in your own cases and practise conversations that create tension. You do not receive an academic diploma, but you do receive a certificate of participation and skills you can apply straight away. Choose an academic programme if you want to broaden your strategic outlook. Choose this programme if you want to switch more effectively between directing, aligning and coaching in your team from tomorrow onwards.

The programme is designed to support transfer to practice. From day 1 you work with your own cases, conversations and situations from your own team, not with fictitious examples. Between the course days there is room to apply the techniques you have learned, such as making agreements, holding a feedback conversation or consciously switching between instructing, coaching, supporting and delegating. You formulate concrete actions to carry out between the days. On the next course day you reflect on what worked and what did not. That is a difference compared with a stand-alone course or e-learning, where applying the material is usually entirely up to you without any feedback moment. Beyond that, how well it sticks depends on how consistently you keep using the approach in your daily work afterwards.
