You build a solid foundation as a manager and learn to switch between four leadership styles. You adapt your approach to the employee and the situation, and manage with greater calm, overview and flexibility.

Description

You learn to state expectations clearly, manage behaviour and results, give feedback and hold difficult conversations. You also gain insight into motivation, ownership and effective delegation.

In the final part you go deeper into situational leadership. You learn to apply the four styles of directing, coaching, supporting and delegating, to recognise employees' development levels and to switch between styles deliberately. In this way you develop an approach that is clear and flexible, and you tailor your leadership to different employees and situations.

Topics

  • The role and positioning of the manager
  • Communication and voicing expectations
  • Steering on behaviour and results
  • Giving feedback and holding difficult conversations
  • Motivating and encouraging ownership
  • Delegating effectively without micromanaging
  • Dealing with change and resilience
  • The basics of situational leadership
  • The four styles: instructing, coaching, supporting and delegating
  • Recognising employees' development levels
  • Switching between styles without confusion
  • Managing for ownership and growth

Result

After this programme, you will stand more firmly in your role as a manager and communicate more clearly about expectations and agreements. You will conduct difficult conversations with more confidence and be better able to assess what your employees need.

  • You deliberately take up your position as a manager.
  • You state expectations clearly and make concrete agreements.
  • You give feedback and address issues with people without damaging the relationship.
  • You recognise your employees' development level for each task.
  • You switch deliberately between directing, coaching, supporting and delegating.
  • You manage for ownership and growth, with greater calm and a clearer overview.

Target audience

This course is intended for managers who want to strengthen their foundation and at the same time learn to switch between different styles. You want to respond better to differences between employees and are looking for more flexibility and calm in the way you lead.

Teaching method

The course is practical and interactive. You bring in your own cases and work on situations from your own team. Short explanations alternate with exercises and reflection, so you can translate insights directly into your work. At the end, you formulate concrete points of attention for your further development as a manager.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. It helps if you hold a management role or are about to take one on, so that you can link the exercises to your own practice. Experience in a management role is welcome, but not a requirement.

Comments

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

  • “During this course, theory and practical examples alternated nicely! The theory discussed reinforced my conviction as to why you can act in a particular way in certain situations. I thought the trainer came across as very professional. You can tell she really knows what she is talking about and that she was very good at responding to what we needed at that moment. Sometimes, for example, we discussed a particular situation that had occurred at work: she would then immediately come up with practical tools we could use next time we found ourselves in such a situation. She was also good at connecting the theory to practice. The practical examples made the theory much clearer to me.”

Frequently asked questions

The course is suitable for managers who want to strengthen their foundation and switch more flexibly between leadership styles. Think of new team leaders, managers who have just moved up from a colleague role, and experienced managers who want to respond better to differences between employees. Prior knowledge is not required. You work with your own cases from your team, so the insights connect directly to your daily practice.

You learn to apply four leadership styles: directing, coaching, supporting and delegating. On day 3 you go deeper into situational leadership and practise switching between these styles. You learn to recognise employees' development levels on the basis of task maturity, motivation and competence, so that you can tailor your approach to each employee and situation.

The course is classroom-based, practical and interactive. You bring in your own cases from your team and work on concrete situations. Short bursts of theory are alternated with exercises, role plays and reflection, so that you translate insights directly into your work. At the end, you formulate concrete points of attention for your further development as a manager.

This classroom course suits you if you are looking for structure and a complete foundation, plus the chance to practise with other managers. You work on taking up your role, communication, feedback, delegating and the four styles of situational leadership (directing, coaching, supporting, delegating). You practise with recognisable real-life situations and compare notes with fellow managers from other organisations. An individual coach makes more sense if you have a specific, personal issue, such as a team that has ground to a halt or a conflict, and you want to work on deeper reflection without a group context. Many participants combine the two: first the framework and the skills from the course, then targeted coaching on a case of their own. If what you mainly need is knowledge and room to practise, this course is the logical place to start.

The course is structured so that you practise with your own team between the days. On day 1 you bring in a concrete case, for example an employee you want to address or an agreement that is repeatedly not kept. After day 1 you practise stating clear expectations and following up on agreements. Between day 2 and day 3 you apply feedback and delegation in real conversations. On day 3 you link this to the four styles of situational leadership: directing, coaching, supporting and delegating. You finish with concrete points of attention for each member of staff. Do not expect a complete change in behaviour within a week. You will, however, notice from day 2 onwards that you manage agreements and behaviour more clearly.
