The definition De Dikke van Dale gives for the word 'negotiating' is: 'trying to reach agreement with one another'. In fact, everyone is negotiating much of the time, because there are as many opinions as there are people, and to match those opinions up to some extent, negotiation is required. That ranges from the very small (Mum, can I have a biscuit? Yes, if you tidy up your toys) to the very large (Will Turkey become part of the European Union? Then Turkey will have to meet a great many requirements).

Negotiating is about looking for options that work well for both parties. This requires creativity and a search for alternative solutions. If someone sets out determined to stick to their own opinion and not give an inch, there is no point in negotiating. In many cases, however, it is important to follow the same course. Whether that is in a business environment, a private situation or even at government level. The outcome of the negotiations offers all parties something to hold on to and provides clarity.

For people who disagree with one another, working together is difficult. That is why negotiations often form an important part of that cooperation. In a partnership, people depend on each other to achieve certain goals. Interests sometimes differ, but the goals often overlap. That is why the two parties come into contact in the first place. A range of factors play a role in negotiating, such as: what is the relationship between the negotiators? Are they equal in position, or is it a case of an employee and a manager, with power playing a role? What is the negotiating climate? Is the atmosphere good and what time pressure lies behind it? How important is the matter the negotiations are about? And there are many more things that play a role.

The starting point in negotiating is to reach an agreement, or at least a compromise. Read in this free course how you can achieve this.
