Conducting performance and appraisal interviews requires preparation, structure and the right conversation techniques. In this course you work on a professional approach that motivates your staff and results in concrete agreements.
In this course you will learn how to conduct performance reviews and appraisal interviews in a professional manner. You will gain insight into the differences between the two types of interview and discover when to use which within the Performance Management Cycle.
You work on thorough preparation, a clear conversation structure and the deliberate use of conversation techniques such as listening, probing and summarising. You also practise evaluating objectively, giving and receiving feedback, and dealing with emotions and resistance. Tools such as the STAR method and SMART objectives are covered in detail.
The course is practical in nature: you actively work with realistic situations from your own working practice, so that you can apply what you have learned directly in your conversations with employees.
After this course you will conduct appraisal and performance review meetings that make a difference. You know the difference between the two types of meeting and when to use each within the Performance Management Cycle.
You prepare meetings in a structured way and stay in control during the meeting itself. By listening attentively, asking follow-up questions and summarising, you get to the heart of the matter more quickly. You map out your employees' strengths and pitfalls objectively using the STAR method.
You will also deal better with emotions and resistance at the table. You give and receive feedback in a way that motivates, and you close conversations with clear conclusions and SMART agreements that you and your employee can genuinely work with.
This course is intended for (HR) managers and team leaders who want to become skilled in conducting appraisal and performance review meetings. Whether you have just started managing people or already have years of experience: you will learn how to conduct these conversations professionally and effectively.
The course is practical and interactive in design. After an intake, the trainer tailors the programme to your learning objectives and your working situation. You actively practise with realistic conversation exercises, role plays and case studies from your own practice. You receive direct feedback from the trainer and the other participants.
We work in small groups of no more than eight participants, so there is plenty of room for personal attention and for practising new conversation techniques. A safe learning environment is central: you can experiment with new skills and discover what works for you. Theory and practice alternate continuously, so you can apply what you have learned directly in your own performance and appraisal interviews.
No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. It does help if your work involves performance or appraisal interviews, or if you are about to take on a role in which you will be conducting these interviews.
None in particular.
Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.
Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.
The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.
When would you like to start?
At Learnit you will always find a course that takes you further. From (technical) IT skills to communication or personal leadership. You can also choose the training format that suits you best: a classroom course, a tailor-made course at your own office, an online course or an e-learning. Personal attention and a pleasant atmosphere. Whether you take a course with us, at your office or on your own PC, we make sure you feel at home enough to push your boundaries.
New opportunities arise when you get moving. Stay sharp. Keep taking new steps. We encourage you to take the plunge and really go for it.
Discover something new. Build on your strengths. And choose your own path. We help you grow with training courses and learning formats that genuinely suit you.
We always think in terms of possibilities and win-win. And every day we work on new solutions for tomorrow. By offering training courses that leave you well prepared for the future.
We don't make empty promises. What we do offer is quality, knowledge and experience. A broad range of courses, made possible by our inspired staff and trainers.
We listen to what matters to you. To what you need. Because that is where our solution, our tailored approach, begins. Understanding each other properly and communicating clearly: that is what we believe in.
Taking a training course at Learnit means learning together. Together with your experienced trainer, together with your course group or together with your colleagues. And whether you take the training at home, at your office or at one of our training locations, we are always available to help you. To share our knowledge with you in a way that is genuinely useful to you. Getting further together through personal attention and understanding each other well; that is what we believe in.
Learning theory from a book that you can then hardly use in your work? Not at Learnit! Whichever training you take with us, you can put it to use at your workplace straight away. Because of the unique learning objectives you set together with the trainer at the start of the training. Because of the alternation between theory and (interactive) practical assignments. And by bringing the challenges you face in your daily work along to the training.
No suitable start date? Send us a date request. Then we will look together at how we can still meet your training needs.
What others say about this course
Conducting Appraisal and Performance Review Meetings course reviews - Average rating 8.9 from 14 reviews
“The course was well put together and I got a lot out of it. You could clearly tell that the trainer is an expert in this field and beyond. We also covered a number of matters (briefly) that were not directly related to the course itself. I found the intake interview beforehand surprising. I noticed that it allows you to make a good start on the course straight away.”
A. Goldewijk, Holanda B.V. - Conducting Performance and Appraisal Interviews course

J. Bakker, Topa- Conducting performance and appraisal interviews
“Very well thought-out course. Theory, applying it yourself, role play (which elements work and which do not), role play again. So that all facets were covered through repetition. Training is repetition. The trainer created a very pleasant atmosphere and had perfect expertise.”

M. Mulder, Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) FMHaaglanden – Conversation Techniques

R. Toftdal - Westfriesland Academie - Motivational Interviewing
"An instructive and dynamic tailor-made course."
- Motivational interviewing
“A to-the-point training course in which the differences between participants regarding conducting conversations were addressed very well. Each participant gained their own insights and learning objectives, and sharing those insights also proved interesting for everyone. I thought a strong point was the use of models, with participants being asked to supply the content. This worked far better than presenting a model with often abstract concepts that then have to sink in and subsequently be put into practice/translated in an exercise.”
R. Stap, Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland- Conversation Techniques
“The content was very good and well tailored to our company. The trainer was highly knowledgeable and was able to give many recognisable examples. The intake interview beforehand was good too.”

H. Schoordijk, Provincie Noord-Holland- Conversation Techniques
“I think everyone should take this course. I learned a lot of new things about communication. It also really held up a mirror to the things I do without being aware of them. That was certainly a good eye-opener.”
K. van Sprang - Ayvens Nederland - Conducting Professional Conversations
"The professionalism of the course leader (Roeli), the attention paid to personal learning objectives and the connection between participants meant that the conversation techniques course was experienced as highly positive."
- Conversation Techniques
“Interesting to pause and consider situations at work and to reflect on your behaviour and performance in a professional environment.”
A.G. Weisz, Gemeente Amsterdam Stadsdeel Centrum – Conversation Techniques
“The tips and tricks you get from this course are highly applicable to day-to-day practice. It is good to sharpen your focus again in this way.”
S. Kortekaas, Beter:- Absence support: Conducting absence interviews
“The course is definitely to be recommended. Beforehand you can pass on your learning objectives during a brief telephone conversation with the trainer. All your objectives are then covered. The trainer teaches in a very enjoyable way, with structure but without it feeling imposed in any way. Input from participants is greatly appreciated. Presenting in front of the camera seems daunting at first, but it is very instructive and ultimately great fun too. As well as being very instructive and readily applicable, I also found the days very enjoyable. A shame that it is over. Fortunately I still have my course material with my notes, and the important points are still firmly in my head.”
G.T. Huitema, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK) - Conversation Techniques
