A good training course begins with a well-considered design. You learn how to translate learning objectives into content, working methods and structure, and how to record this in a session plan that gives you something to hold on to during delivery.

Description

You are given the task of setting up a training course. How do you go about it? Participants are only satisfied if they go home with new insights and skills that they can apply immediately. That requires relevant topics, a clear purpose for the theory and a structure that is easy to follow.

In this course you go through all the phases of developing a training course. You learn to choose the right information and exercises, to apply a logical structure and to make clear connections for the participant. You translate your programme idea into a script: the trainer's manual with which any trainer can deliver the same course.

The practical preconditions are also covered. Think of scheduling per component, the resources required, a back-up programme and how to deal with unforeseen situations.

Topics

  • Preparation when developing a training course
  • Learning needs as the basis for the learning plan
  • Experiential learning and Kolb's learning cycle
  • Success factors for a training course
  • Sequence and relevance in the learning process
  • Learning objectives analysis
  • Writing persuasive copy for a training course
  • Creating overview and structure
  • Repeating and building bridges between components
  • Planning and time management
  • Back-up programme and emergency exercises
  • Selecting information
  • Different types of practice formats
  • Energy levels and variety
  • Writing a session plan

Result

Afterwards you will be able to deliver a stimulating course that is didactically sound. You translate subject matter into a logical training programme, choose suitable working methods and record everything in a workable session plan that you can put to use straight away.

Target audience

This course is suitable for trainers and aspiring trainers who want to improve their skills in designing training courses. Think of people who give courses without formal training, who need a professional view of their programme, or who want a solid theoretical basis for developing learning programmes.

Teaching method

The course alternates between concrete experience, experimenting with techniques, reflection and exploring theory. In this way the programme caters to different learning preferences. You work actively on your own training idea, receive feedback from the trainer and fellow participants, and constantly translate what you learn to your own practice. This increases insight and the chance of lasting change in the way you design training courses.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required. Some experience with, or interest in, training helps you to link the material directly to your own practice.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Language

The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.

  • “I had a private course entirely tailored to my needs. Together we developed a course pitched at the level of the target group it is intended for. Working on it together and hearing ideas gave me ideas of my own and a clearer view of how I want it. In particular, probing thoroughly into what result needs to be achieved, gauging where the participants stand at the start, and how to address any resistance among participants right at the beginning. Also estimating the timing of each part properly, being clear about the key question or exercise, and finally making sure the participants finish with a good result.”

Frequently asked questions

You will learn how to design a training course from start to finish. From mapping out learning needs and learning objectives, choosing content and working methods, through to building a logical structure and working it out into a script. You apply this directly to a training idea of your own.

The course is suitable for trainers and prospective trainers who want to improve their design skills. Think of people who deliver training courses without formal training, who are looking for a professional view of their existing programme, or who want a solid theoretical basis for developing learning programmes.

No specific prior knowledge is required. Some experience with training, or a concrete training idea you want to work on, helps you to translate the material directly to your own practice.

Yes, on completion you will receive the Learnit certificate of attendance. This shows that you have taken the Developing Training Courses course.

A session plan is the trainer's manual for your programme. For each element it describes the content, the working method, the timing, the materials required and the objective. With a good session plan you, or a colleague, can deliver the course in a consistent way.

Yes. You apply the theory and training formats directly to a training idea from your own practice. That way you go home with a concrete design and the building blocks for a working session plan.

You start with the learning needs of the participants and the result they want to achieve in their work. Working back from that result, you formulate learning objectives that are observable and concrete: what should the participant be able to do, know or apply after the course? Those objectives then guide your content, working methods and evaluation.

Kolb's learning cycle describes learning as a cycle of concrete experience, reflection, exploring theory and active experimentation. By having your training programme run through all four phases, you cater to different learning preferences and increase the chance that participants actually apply what they have learned.

The working method always follows from the learning objective. If you want to transfer knowledge, a short explanation or quiz works well. If you want to practise a skill, choose a role play, case study or simulation. If you want reflection, peer consultation or a writing assignment works well. Variety keeps energy levels high and caters to different learning preferences.

Work from the known to the unknown and from the simple to the complex. Start with an opening that provides context and relevance, build up the content in clear blocks with a short recap each time, and end every block with a bridge to the next. A clear common thread helps participants keep track of the bigger picture.

During a training course something unexpected always happens: an exercise that takes more or less time than planned, a group with more or less energy than expected, or technology that fails. With a back-up programme and emergency exercises you have alternatives to fall back on, so you can switch flexibly without losing the quality of the course.
