Training in IT or engineering takes more than subject knowledge alone. How do you deal with differences in level, resistance and that inevitable technical hitch? On this course you work on your teaching skills and discover your own style as a trainer.

Description

In this course you learn how to deliver an IT or technical training course that sticks. You actively experiment with different training methods and receive personal feedback on your training style from experienced Learnit trainers.

You work on didactic skills, presentation and making contact with your group. You discover how to deal with differences in level between participants, how to find a balance between explanation and practice, and how to turn resistance among users into acceptance of a new package or product. You also learn how to separate main points from side issues: what do you demonstrate and what do you leave out, and how do you make sure the material covered sticks?

You receive feedback and insight into the effect of your own behaviour in front of the group. The course also covers how to prepare for technical setbacks during a training course and how to stay calm when the equipment lets you down. By the end of the course you will have a firmer theoretical foundation and a practical toolkit for taking your courses to a higher level.

Topics

During this course the following topics, among others, are covered:

  • Didactic principles
  • Do’s and don’ts during a course
  • The trainer’s attitude
  • The importance of clear communication
  • Preparing your lessons
  • Learning methods and delivery formats
  • Applying KISS in explanations, examples and exercises
  • Finding a balance between explaining and practising
  • Dealing with critical questions and difficult participants
  • Working with mixed groups and differing levels
  • Removing fear of IT or technology
  • Dealing with technical problems during your course
  • Encouraging self-reliance in participants
  • Evaluating and gathering feedback

Result

After the course you will be able to deliver a stimulating IT or technical training course and convey the material in a didactically sound way. You will know your own training style and how to make the most of your strengths. You will connect with your target group, make genuine contact and actively seek interaction instead of one-way traffic. You will deal smoothly with critical questions, difficult participants and differences in level within the group. You will also know how to handle resistance to new software or products, and you will keep a cool head when the technology lets you down during a course.

Target audience

This course is intended for IT and technical professionals who deliver training courses, or will do so in the future, but who have not been trained for this. You will recognise yourself in one or more of the following points:

You give training courses on software, hardware or technical processes and want to take a more professional approach; you provide user training during the roll-out of new systems or products; you would like a professional perspective on your approach and feedback on your training style; you feel there is more to be gained from your courses; you want a firmer theoretical grounding in didactics and in conveying technical knowledge.

Teaching method

A professional perspective on the way you train gives you targeted feedback, tips and tricks. You gain insight into the effect of your own behaviour and learn to distinguish between desirable and undesirable actions in relation to your end goals. Dealing with resistance is also covered: what works, and what could you do differently? The intervention ladder helps you with this. During the course you have several successful experiences and go home inspired. And from now on you will know how to pass that inspiration on to your own participants.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge. It is useful, however, if you already have some experience with IT or technology and enjoy passing this knowledge on to others. Whether you are just starting out as a trainer or already do some teaching: you are welcome.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Language

The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.

Frequently asked questions

No specific prior education is required for the Train the Trainer for IT and Technical Professionals course. You have subject knowledge of IT or technology and the ambition to pass this knowledge on to others. The course is suitable if you already train without any formal teaching qualification, or if you want to become a trainer and are looking for a firmer grounding in teaching methods, presentation and group dynamics.

This classroom course is intended for IT staff, technicians and software specialists who train colleagues or clients but have not been specifically trained to do so. You may, for example, be involved in the roll-out of a new software package, give product demonstrations or support end users. The course is also a good fit if you already have experience and want a professional view of your training style.

The Train the trainer for IT and technical professionals course covers teaching principles, delivery formats, preparation and dealing with mixed groups. You practise your own training style and receive direct feedback. You also learn how to deal with resistance, critical questions and technical problems during an IT course. The delivery format is classroom-based.

Yes, on completion of the Train the Trainer for IT and Technical Professionals course you receive a certificate of participation from Learnit. This certificate confirms that you have attended the course and have practised the teaching principles, delivery formats and trainer skills covered. It is a valuable addition to your CV, particularly if you have not previously completed any teacher training.

The Train the trainer for IT and technical professionals course is taught in a classroom setting. You take the course together with other participants. The classroom format is a deliberate choice: you actively experiment with training methods, practise in front of a group and receive direct feedback on your personal training style from an experienced Learnit trainer.

The general train-the-trainer course focuses on teaching methods for broad subjects. The version for IT and technical professionals deals specifically with the challenges that come with technical courses: dealing with mixed levels of knowledge within the group, resistance to new software or products, fear of IT, choosing between demonstrating and practising, and what to do when the technology fails during your course. KISS principles in technical explanations and encouraging self-reliance among users are also covered. The course is delivered in a classroom setting. You receive feedback on your own training style and work with the intervention ladder for dealing with resistance. Choose this version if you deliver courses on software, hardware or technical processes; choose the general version if you mainly train soft skills or subject matter.

Both situations receive explicit attention. Murphy's law regularly makes an appearance during IT and technical courses, so you practise how to prepare for downtime and what to do if software, hardware or the demo environment fails during your course. For resistance, you work with the intervention ladder: a model that helps you decide, situation by situation, how firmly to intervene, from a light remark to a direct confrontation. You also practise with sceptical users during the roll-out of new software or products, and with critical questions or difficult participants in mixed groups. You receive feedback and insight into the effect your response has. That is a difference from general train-the-trainer courses, where IT-specific failures and user resistance are rarely central.

A presentation skills course focuses on speaking in front of a group: use of voice, body language, structuring a story. Train the Trainer for IT and technical professionals goes further and covers didactics specifically for technical material. You learn how to find the balance between explanation and practice, how to deal with mixed groups in which knowledge levels vary, and how to turn around resistance among users of new software or products. Topics such as KISS in exercises, encouraging self-reliance and dealing with technical problems during a demo are covered only in this course. You receive feedback on your own style as a trainer. Choose this if you deliver IT or technical training on a regular basis, not for one-off presentations.

Self-study works perfectly well if you are looking for individual tips on presenting or structuring a lesson. What it does not teach you, however, is how your own style as a trainer comes across in a group. Train the Trainer for IT Professionals and Technicians is classroom-based and. The difference lies in two things a book cannot give you: direct feedback from an experienced trainer and practice with genuinely mixed groups and critical questions. You also work with the intervention ladder to deal with resistance and practise with situations specific to IT and technical courses, such as software failing during a demonstration. Choose self-study as a supplement; choose this course if you want to become structurally better at delivering a training course.

Three things you rarely get in practice: targeted feedback on your own style, a didactic framework, and practice with difficult situations in a safe environment. You receive feedback on your own performance, so you can see the effect of your behaviour on participants. Something you never observe objectively during a real training course. You work with the intervention ladder for dealing with resistance, and with the KISS principle for explanations and exercises. You will also be given tools for mixed groups, technical failures during your session and critical questions. In practice you mainly learn by trial and error; here you get a professional perspective from experienced Learnit trainers and concrete tips you can apply straight away.

This classroom course has been developed specifically for IT and technical professionals who already deliver training or are about to, without a background in teaching. You fit the target group if you recognise that there is more to be got out of your courses, or if you want a professional view of your approach. The difference with a general teaching qualification: here everything revolves around the practice of technical training, such as dealing with mixed groups, resistance to new software and moments when the technology fails. You gain insight into your own style as a trainer and receive feedback from experienced Learnit trainers. It is less suitable if you are looking for a general presentation skills course or do not convey technical content.
