As a trainer you want to do more than transfer knowledge: you want to inspire. In the training course Train the trainer you develop your own style, learn to deal with resistance and use working methods that really stick.

Description

In the course Train the trainer you work on your personal style as a trainer. You gain insight into how you present yourself to the group, how you come across and what effect you have on your participants. Together with an experienced trainer you look at setting up a training course, from preparation to evaluation.

You look closely at your target group and determine when a course is successful. Various working methods are covered, so that you experience for yourself the effect of the different ways of conveying knowledge. You gain insight into your own behaviour and receive targeted feedback, tips and practical tools.

At the end of the course you put what you have learned straight into practice by delivering your own mini training session. That way you go home inspired. And from now on you will know how to pass that inspiration on to your participants.

Topics

The following topics, among others, are covered during the course:

  • Insight into your own style as a trainer: you become aware of your role as a trainer and of your strengths and development points.
  • Setting learning objectives: knowledge, insight, skills and behaviour.
  • Connecting with your target group: you put yourself in the participants' shoes, so that they feel heard.
  • Preparation and prerequisites: what do you need to take into account before you start?
  • Providing structure: delivering an interactive, varied and well-structured programme.
  • Standing in front of a group: making contact and your attitude.
  • Varying your working methods: holding your participants' attention, including in hybrid and online settings.
  • Dealing with tension and nerves: standing in front of a group with confidence and enjoyment.
  • Difficult situations: dealing with differences in level and with resistance.

Result

After this training course you will deliver a stimulating training session in which you convey the material in a didactically sound way. You know your own training style and how to make the most of your strengths. You connect with your target group, make genuine contact and avoid one-way traffic.

You actively seek interaction, guide cases smoothly and alternate between different working methods to hold attention. You deal thoughtfully with critical questions and resistance, and respond to the varying learning styles of your participants. Finally, you round off the course with a mini training course of your own, in which you put what you have learned straight into practice.

Target audience

This course is suitable if you want to develop or sharpen your training skills. Do you recognise yourself in one or more of these points?

You are a trainer or want to become one, but have not been trained for it; you would like a professional view of your approach; you feel there is more to be got out of your courses; you want a firmer theoretical basis for delivering training.

This list is of course not exhaustive: everyone is different. What would you like to focus on within the training profession?

Teaching method

An experienced trainer observes your way of training with a professional eye and gives you targeted feedback, practical tips and concrete tools. You gain insight into the effect of your own behaviour in front of a group. This teaches you to recognise the difference between behaviour that contributes to your end goals and behaviour that gets in the way.

You practise in a small group with realistic situations and finish with your own mini-training session. During the course you are guaranteed to build up experiences of success. You go home inspired yourself and know how to pass that inspiration on to your participants from now on.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. It helps if you already have some experience with groups or delivering training, but you are equally welcome if you are just starting out. An open attitude and the willingness to look at yourself are the most important things.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Language

The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.

  • “My intention to train more interactively has succeeded. I noticed that I paid attention to participants' questions, but quickly moved on with my material in order to cover all my own content. I have grown in letting go of the content more and responding more to participants' questions, linking my knowledge to those questions, which meant participants felt more invited and encouraged to contribute. The result was a more interactive way of enriching knowledge and a greater sense of connection with the participants. Excellent! Many thanks.”

Frequently asked questions

The Train the Trainer course is suitable for anyone who gives courses or wants to start doing so, but has not been specifically trained for it. Think of subject-matter experts who want to pass on their knowledge, novice trainers looking for a firmer foundation and experienced trainers who want to sharpen their approach. No specific prior education is required; an affinity with knowledge transfer and with groups is enough.

Yes, on completing the Train the Trainer course you receive a certificate of attendance from Learnit. This certificate confirms that you have attended the classroom course and have actively practised the trainer skills covered, including designing a course, working with different teaching formats and delivering your own mini-training on the final day.

During the Train the Trainer course you learn to use various teaching formats to hold participants' attention and convey knowledge effectively. You practise with interactive programmes, case supervision and alternating between theory and practice. You receive feedback and insight into the effect of your own approach. At the end you deliver a mini-training yourself in which you apply what you have learned.

No, for the Train the Trainer course you do not need any specific prior education or knowledge. It is useful, however, if you already have some experience in transferring knowledge, or if you will soon be standing in front of a group. In an individual intake beforehand, your learning objectives are identified so that the programme of the classroom course matches your situation and experience.

Yes, the Train the Trainer course can also be delivered in-company at your organisation's premises. The programme is then tailored to your team's learning objectives, prior knowledge and practical experience. The final programme is determined through an individual intake beforehand. That way the course ties in closely with the everyday situations your trainers encounter.

Learnit's Train the Trainer course is classroom-based and personal in its set-up. The biggest difference compared with self-study or e-learning lies in two elements: direct feedback on your own behaviour as a trainer and delivering a mini training course with personal tips from an experienced trainer. You will not get that mirror in an online module. Self-study works perfectly well for theory around learning objectives, learning styles and working methods. But to develop your personal training style, deal with resistance and hold your own in front of a group, you need a physical setting with fellow participants. Choose self-study if you mainly want to acquire knowledge. Choose this classroom course if you want to sharpen your skills and receive concrete feedback on how you come across to a group.

For experienced trainers, the main benefit lies in the outside perspective on your training style. During the course you receive targeted feedback on how you come across in front of a group, how you respond to resistance and which patterns you unconsciously repeat. You deliver a mini training course yourself and receive extensive feedback on it. For seasoned trainers, that part is often the most confronting and the most instructive, because your own blind spots become visible. You also broaden your repertoire of working methods and practise with difficult situations such as differing levels within the group. This is mainly worthwhile if you bring concrete learning objectives with you; these are discussed in an individual intake beforehand and help determine the final programme. For trainers who are only looking for theoretical depth, a specialist book is cheaper.

Learnit's Train the Trainer course focuses on delivering training to adults in a work context, not on teaching pupils or students within a school system. The emphasis is on short, interactive courses in which behavioural change and skills are central, not on a multi-year curriculum. You work on your personal training style, on setting up a course from preparation through to evaluation, on dealing with resistance and on varying your working methods. A teacher training programme or pedagogical module often lasts one to four years and leads to a teaching qualification; this course does not. You finish with your own mini-training session and receive targeted feedback on it. Choose this course if you deliver, or want to deliver, training to professionals, teams or clients. Not if you want to teach in mainstream education.

The Train the Trainer course is predominantly practice-oriented. Throughout, you practise standing in front of a group, using teaching methods and dealing with resistance. At the end you deliver your own mini-course and receive direct feedback, so that you see the effect of your own behaviour. Theory is covered where it underpins your actions: formulating learning objectives (knowledge, insight, skills, behaviour), recognising learning styles and building a course didactically from preparation to evaluation. The emphasis lies firmly on doing and reflecting, not on listening. Compared with an online course in teaching methods, here you receive direct feedback from an experienced trainer and fellow participants. That is exactly what you miss in self-study. Beforehand there is an intake, in which your own learning objectives are incorporated into the programme.

You apply what you learn directly. On the third course day you deliver a mini-course to the group yourself, with feedback from an experienced trainer. This means that before the end of the you will already have worked through a complete training cycle: preparation, delivery and evaluation. The working methods you learn (interactive assignments, case supervision, dealing with resistance) can be put to use from the very next course you deliver yourself. For structural behavioural change. Such as a calmer manner in front of the group or consistently matching learning styles. In practice, expect a number of courses in which you practise consciously. The feedback during the course speeds up that process, because you receive concrete feedback on the effect of your own behaviour instead of having to guess at it.

The biggest difference lies in the feedback on your behaviour in front of the group. During the course you deliver a mini training session and receive immediate feedback from the trainer and the other participants. This shows you concretely what effect your posture, voice and choice of words have on your audience – something a book cannot give you. You also practise live with difficult situations: resistance within the group, differences in level between participants and critical questions. You receive direct tips from an experienced trainer and your fellow participants act as a realistic test group. Self-study gives you knowledge of teaching methods; this course gives you insight into your own training style and how to adjust it purposefully.
