You explain why things need to change. You mention the consequences, you offer a solution, you hear yourself sounding reasonable. The other person nods, and then carries on doing exactly what they were doing before. That has nothing to do with their character and nothing to do with your arguments. It has to do with the division of roles: as soon as you defend the side of change, there is only one role left, and the other person takes it.

This free online course is the starter for our full Motivational interviewing. The first four chapters show you why persuasion provokes resistance, how to read doubt rather than push it away, how to hear when someone is genuinely starting to move, and what to do when the conversation becomes difficult. Each chapter ends with a short knowledge check.

The full course goes on to cover the underlying mindset behind the method, the four processes of a motivational conversation, the OARS skills, reflective listening at three levels, working with values, and the step from motivation to a plan that holds up. Would you like to practise that with a trainer present, and with your own conversations on the table? Then take a look at the Motivational Interviewing course.

Motivational interviewing

Chapters 1 to 3 in a single PDF, with a worksheet and cheat sheet.

Contents:

  • 0.-

    Introduction
How this free course is structured and what you learn in the four chapters.
  • 1.-

    Why persuading backfires
The paradox of persuasion, the division of roles that you yourself set in motion, and resistance as a signal within the conversation rather than a trait of the other person.
  • 2.-

Ambivalence and the language of holding on
Why yes and no can be true at the same time, the five forms of sustain talk and how you acknowledge both sides of the scales without choosing.
  • 3.-

    Recognising and evoking change talk
DARN and CAT, the four questions that bring change talk to the surface, and the four ways of reinforcing a statement instead of letting it evaporate.
  • 4.-

    Rolling with resistance
Recognising the righting reflex in yourself, the difference between sustain talk and friction in the relationship, multiple roles and autonomy as a lever.
  • 5.-

    The spirit of motivational interviewing
PACE: partnership, acceptance, compassion and evocation, and how to tell that you are slipping back into expert mode.
  • 6.-

The four processes of a motivational interview
Engaging, focusing, evoking and planning: where you are in the conversation, and what goes wrong if you skip a phase.
  • 7.-

    The OARS skills
Open questions, affirmations, reflections and summaries as the tools with which you shape the four processes.
  • 8.-

    Reflective listening at three levels
From repeating to adding meaning, the feeling reflection, and the double-sided reflection in which both sides become visible.
  • 9.-

    Developing discrepancy
Making values visible and letting someone feel the gap between what they consider important and what they do, without damaging the relationship.
  • 10.-

From motivation to a change plan
Recognising when planning is called for, a plan with a goal, a first step, obstacles and feedback, and the scaling question that tests it.
  • 11.-

Your own action plan as the person leading the conversation
Your strengths, your pitfall, one skill for the coming months and a peer supervision partner who listens in.

What participants say about Learnit

I found the 'Interview Techniques' course to be good. Nothing to fault. It was also good that Job called beforehand for a short preliminary discussion. You don't see that very often. A very worthwhile course. It also had a strong element of repetition. Plenty of variety, including between theory and practice. Learned a lot, and applied it straight away during the course. And I think these learnings will also help me further when conducting interviews.

We took the Outlook, Teams and OneNote course with Roy Nieuwenhuijzen. Good content, and a few days before the course he got in touch with me (coordinator of the course, head of the secretariat). Pleasant that you can fill in the day itself as needed. The booklet for reference is rather dated, but apparently there is little up-to-date material to be found.

In May 2024 I took the WordPress course. As an IT enthusiast with broad but not necessarily deep knowledge, I wanted to know more about WordPress. How do you install everything and how do you start building a website. This course is extremely well suited to that. From the outset you learn in 3 days how to start a website and what to look out for. I now have a solid basis for getting to work with WordPress and I know my way around the various options. The course is recommended for anyone who wants to learn in three days what WordPress can do and how to apply it.
