The Personal Development Plan is a proven method for giving direction to employee growth. In the PDP Interviews course you learn how to draw up a PDP contract, conduct the interview, deal with resistance and secure agreements. From start to evaluation.

Description

Investing in employee development pays off for both sides: employees feel valued and challenged, and the organisation retains committed and skilled people. The Personal Development Plan (PDP) is a proven method for giving that development a clear shape.

In this course you are given practical tools for conducting PDP interviews effectively and for guiding the development process from start to finish. You work on drawing up a clear PDP contract, practise conversation techniques and learn how to gain insight into your employee's performance. You will also look at dealing with resistance, safeguarding the agreements made and evaluating results.

You finish the course with a complete approach: from the first interview and the interim progress to the evaluation of the final result.

Topics

  • What does a good Personal Development Plan contract look like?
  • Conversation techniques that work
  • Gaining insight into your employee's performance using the 360° feedback model
  • Dealing with resistance
  • Recording and safeguarding agreements
  • Using different working methods
  • The PDP meeting from opening to closing
  • Evaluating and following up on results

Result

After this course, you will independently draw up a clear PDP contract and hold focused PDP meetings with your staff. You will know how to gain insight into someone's performance using 360° feedback, how to deal with resistance and how to safeguard the agreements you make.

You master the conversation techniques required from the first introduction through to the evaluation, and you can use various working methods to really get your employee's development going. This ensures that personal development does not remain a paper exercise, but delivers concrete results for both your employee and your organisation.

Target audience

This course is intended for managers, team leaders, HR staff and anyone who holds PDP meetings with employees in a coaching role. Whether you are just starting out with development interviews or want to sharpen your skills: you will receive practical tools you can put to use straight away.

Teaching method

You take this course in a small group, so there is ample room for personal attention and interaction. The trainer alternates short pieces of theory with practical exercises in which you work on personal development plan interviews yourself. You practise with recognisable situations from your own working practice and receive immediate feedback from the trainer and the other participants.

You are welcome to bring your own cases. This ensures the course closely matches the challenges you face in your role as a manager or coach. Afterwards you will receive a certificate of attendance.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge for this course. It does help if your work involves guiding or coaching employees, for example as a manager, team leader or in a comparable role.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Language

The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.

That way you were aware of what was happening. It was good that it was a small group, which meant there was real room to put forward specific questions and cases from your own organisation."

  • “A to-the-point training course in which the differences between participants regarding conducting conversations were addressed very well. Each participant gained their own insights and learning objectives, and sharing those insights also proved interesting for everyone. I thought a strong point was the use of models, with participants being asked to supply the content. This worked far better than presenting a model with often abstract concepts that then have to sink in and subsequently be put into practice/translated in an exercise.”

    R. Stap, Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland- Conversation Techniques
    Rating 8.0
  • "Very good impression, experienced trainer and a good lunch"

A good alternation of theory and exercises. Plenty of personal attention, thanks to the small group size. Professionally set up; well prepared, a pleasant intake interview beforehand and a handy reference work. I have gained a lot of knowledge. I am fully engaged with it and apply it daily. Great!"

    J. Versluys, Mooiland - Conversation Techniques

  • “Very well thought-out course. Theory, applying it yourself, role play (which elements work and which do not), role play again. So that all facets were covered through repetition. Training is repetition. The trainer created a very pleasant atmosphere and had perfect expertise.”

Frequently asked questions

The Personal Development Plan Interviews course is intended for managers, team leaders and anyone who fulfils a coaching role within an organisation. No specific prior knowledge is required. You do not need an HR background to take part. It is useful, however, if your work involves supporting employees in their personal development, so that you can apply what you have learned straight away.

In the PDP Interviews course you learn how to set up and guide a complete Personal Development Plan. Topics covered include: drawing up a sound PDP agreement, conversation techniques, the 360° feedback model, dealing with resistance, safeguarding agreements, various working methods, the structure of the PDP interview itself and evaluation techniques. This way you master the entire process from start to finish.

A Personal Development Plan interview goes through four main steps: drawing up a Personal Development Plan contract with concrete development goals, interim progress reviews, the practical implementation of learning activities and a final evaluation. During the course you practise each step, from opening question to closing. You learn to apply conversation techniques, use 360° feedback and record agreements so that the employee actually grows.

Yes, on completing the Personal Development Plan Interviews course you receive a certificate of attendance from Learnit Training. This certificate confirms that you have successfully completed the classroom course and are familiar with drawing up a personal development plan agreement, conversation techniques, the 360° feedback model and evaluation methods. You can add the certificate to your portfolio or LinkedIn profile as evidence of your development in coaching leadership.

Yes, the Personal Development Plan Interviews course can also be taken in-company at a location of your choice. This is worth considering if you want to train several team leaders or managers at the same time in conducting personal development plan interviews. The content and duration remain the same, but the examples and case studies are tailored to the practice within your own organisation. Request a tailor-made quotation for the exact price.

A personal development plan interview and an appraisal interview are two different conversations with different aims. An appraisal interview looks at the employee's current performance: what is going well, what could be better, how is the collaboration going. A personal development plan (POP) interview focuses on the future: which knowledge and skills does the employee want to develop, and which steps and agreements go with that. Learnit's Personal Development Plan Interviews course focuses specifically on the personal development plan process. You learn to draw up a personal development plan agreement, apply conversation techniques, use the 360° feedback model, deal with resistance, safeguard agreements and evaluate the outcome. The course is classroom-based and taught in a small group. If you want to practise appraisal and performance interviews more broadly, a separate course is more suitable.

Learnit's Personal Development Plan Meetings course is a classroom course in which you actively practise conversation techniques, the 360° feedback model and dealing with resistance. That is the key difference with self-study or an online module: you hold real practice conversations with fellow participants and receive immediate feedback from the trainer on your attitude, questioning technique and conversation structure. An HR handbook or e-learning gives you the theory behind a PDP contract and evaluation techniques, but does not train your conversation skills. Choose the classroom course if you are actually going to hold conversations with employees. Choose self-study if you only want to understand the format of a PDP contract without leading the conversation yourself.

The 360° feedback model gathers feedback on an employee's performance from several sources: the manager, immediate colleagues, possibly clients or subordinates, plus a self-assessment. In a personal development plan interview you use that input to make blind spots visible and to underpin development goals with concrete observations rather than a single opinion. During Learnit's Personal Development Plan Interviews course (classroom-based) this model is covered explicitly under 'gaining insight into the employee's performance'. You learn how to organise the feedback, make it open to discussion and translate it into agreements in the personal development plan contract. Compared with a conversation based solely on your own judgement, the 360° approach produces a more balanced picture and less resistance from the employee.

After this classroom day you can independently prepare, conduct and evaluate a personal development plan (POP) interview. You have practised interview techniques, drawing up a POP contract, the 360° feedback model and dealing with resistance. For a first or second round of POP interviews with your own staff, that is usually enough. What it does not replace: experience. Difficult situations. An employee with no wish to develop, a conflict about career direction, a process that has ground to a halt. These call for repetition and reflection. Many participants find that the technique only really lands after three or four real interviews. If you also want to integrate leadership, performance and appraisal, then a further course in performance interviews or coaching leadership is the logical next step. This course focuses specifically on the POP instrument.

Resistance in a PDP meeting usually has a cause: a lack of clarity about the purpose, fear of the consequences, earlier negative experiences or the feeling that development is being 'imposed'. In Learnit's PDP Meetings course, you practise three techniques for dealing with this. One: name the resistance explicitly and ask what lies behind it, rather than arguing against it. Two: switch from sending to listening, using open questions and summarising. Three: draw up the PDP contract together, so that the employee feels ownership of the objectives. We cover this on the course day using role plays based on recognisable practical situations in a classroom setting. You not only learn techniques, but also receive feedback on your own conversational style – something a handbook or e-learning cannot offer.

A personal development plan agreement records the arrangements between employee and employer about a specific development process. In the Personal Development Plan Interviews course you learn which elements are essential: clear development goals (formulated in SMART terms), the chosen learning activities, a timeline with interim review moments, the role and responsibility of both parties, and agreements about the resources required, such as time, budget or support. You also record how and when you will evaluate, and what happens if goals are delayed or adjusted. A workable personal development plan agreement is short, specific and signed by both parties. Not a wish list, but a document of agreements. During the classroom course day you draw up such an agreement yourself based on your own case, so that you see straight away which formulations do and do not hold up in practice.
