Conducting performance and appraisal interviews requires preparation, structure and the right conversation techniques. In this course you work on a professional approach that motivates your staff and results in concrete agreements.
In this course you will learn how to conduct performance reviews and appraisal interviews in a professional manner. You will gain insight into the differences between the two types of interview and discover when to use which within the Performance Management Cycle.
You work on thorough preparation, a clear conversation structure and the deliberate use of conversation techniques such as listening, probing and summarising. You also practise evaluating objectively, giving and receiving feedback, and dealing with emotions and resistance. Tools such as the STAR method and SMART objectives are covered in detail.
The course is practical in nature: you actively work with realistic situations from your own working practice, so that you can apply what you have learned directly in your conversations with employees.
After this course you will conduct appraisal and performance review meetings that make a difference. You know the difference between the two types of meeting and when to use each within the Performance Management Cycle.
You prepare meetings in a structured way and stay in control during the meeting itself. By listening attentively, asking follow-up questions and summarising, you get to the heart of the matter more quickly. You map out your employees' strengths and pitfalls objectively using the STAR method.
You will also deal better with emotions and resistance at the table. You give and receive feedback in a way that motivates, and you close conversations with clear conclusions and SMART agreements that you and your employee can genuinely work with.
This course is intended for (HR) managers and team leaders who want to become skilled in conducting appraisal and performance review meetings. Whether you have just started managing people or already have years of experience: you will learn how to conduct these conversations professionally and effectively.
The course is practical and interactive in design. After an intake, the trainer tailors the programme to your learning objectives and your working situation. You actively practise with realistic conversation exercises, role plays and case studies from your own practice. You receive direct feedback from the trainer and the other participants.
We work in small groups of no more than eight participants, so there is plenty of room for personal attention and for practising new conversation techniques. A safe learning environment is central: you can experiment with new skills and discover what works for you. Theory and practice alternate continuously, so you can apply what you have learned directly in your own performance and appraisal interviews.
No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. It does help if your work involves performance or appraisal interviews, or if you are about to take on a role in which you will be conducting these interviews.
None in particular.
The course is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer speaks English. English-language course materials can be used. If at least 3 participants register, the course can also be given entirely in English.

Ratings from participants after completing their course, across all courses by this trainer.
“A course focused on the practical side of performance and appraisal interviews. You learn not only the standard actions, but also the reasons behind them. That makes it immediately applicable!”
"It is a course with plenty of room for real-life problems. The set-up also gives you enough time to practise cases."
“Very well thought-out course. Theory, applying it yourself, role play (which elements work and which do not), role play again. So that all facets were covered through repetition. Training is repetition. The trainer created a very pleasant atmosphere and had perfect expertise.”
“I had a private course instead of a two-day course. It was intensive, but incredibly instructive. I notice that filming gives a lot of insight into the way you conduct a conversation. Beforehand I thought it would be a long day, but in the end the time went very quickly. We were able to cover a lot of topics and the variety keeps you sharp. I am very satisfied with the trainer. The personal approach and the link to the previous course in particular were very good.”
“An instructive course with plenty of room for feedback, questions and brainstorming. The trainer presented the topics clearly and in a relaxed manner, which was very pleasant. She also left plenty of room to deal with questions.”
“The content was very good and well tailored to our company. The trainer was highly knowledgeable and was able to give many recognisable examples. The intake interview beforehand was good too.”
“A course with personal attention for the participants, in a pleasant environment and a good location.”
“The content is perfectly matched to the target group. Pleasant course, learned a great deal. Thank you!”
“This course puts you in a better position to apply personal and business objectives in a professional and human way.”
“A useful course at an organisation where both the materials and the trainer score more than adequately!”
“Very well organised, well prepared and enjoyable to follow and take part in. Good course material and extra information for after the course. Learnit Training is a professional organisation that devotes a great deal of time to thorough preparation and to the course itself.”
“The course was well put together and I got a lot out of it. You could clearly tell that the trainer is an expert in this field and beyond. We also covered a number of matters (briefly) that were not directly related to the course itself. I found the intake interview beforehand surprising. I noticed that it allows you to make a good start on the course straight away.”
"Excellent, with a good focus on the aim of the course. Because the course was interactive, it was not difficult to stay focused."
"The course is enjoyable and instructive, and the use of video analysis during the role plays is certainly an added value. The material was partly new and partly familiar to me, but even so it was good to refresh the parts I already knew."
“Very instructive, I learned a lot that I can practise with straight away in my day-to-day work and make my own. There was plenty of varied course material. The reference material, the book and the folder of information are also useful to look back on. My learning objectives were covered well during the course, which meant I got a lot out of it. The course was varied, so I was able to stay focused and take an active part. Everyone felt safe enough to dare to learn.”
“The overall impression was good; the course gives you tools to become more aware of your own part in a conversation. Where you may need to take a different approach to achieve a better/more pleasant outcome. Or to discover that you may have done something better in the past than you first thought. (that is nice too sometimes)”
"It is an instructive course that you can use at work but certainly also in your private life. Everything is explained and practised step by step. You also take home a nice book with even more useful tips and interesting material."
"This course was an excellent fit with my learning objective of communicating better."
“Just take this course at some point, always useful.”
“The course is definitely to be recommended. Beforehand you can pass on your learning objectives during a brief telephone conversation with the trainer. All your objectives are then covered. The trainer teaches in a very enjoyable way, with structure but without it feeling imposed in any way. Input from participants is greatly appreciated. Presenting in front of the camera seems daunting at first, but it is very instructive and ultimately great fun too. As well as being very instructive and readily applicable, I also found the days very enjoyable. A shame that it is over. Fortunately I still have my course material with my notes, and the important points are still firmly in my head.”
“Plenty of attention and space to learn (from each other) and gain new insights. Very good to go home after the course with enough practical tools.”
"An instructive and dynamic tailor-made course."
“A good way to learn how to conduct job interviews in the form of STAR interviews. By asking the right questions, you also get a proper picture of how to conduct conversations in the STAR format.”
“It was very pleasant to attend a course at Learnit. There was a lot of personal attention for everyone and we were pushed out of our comfort zone in a "comfortable" way in order to get better at holding professional conversations.”
“The course was practice-oriented and matched the wishes and input of the participants perfectly. The course leader sensed what was needed and gave the course a varied structure with (a short piece of) theory, practical applications and role play. I would certainly recommend this course!”
“An instructive course with plenty of room for feedback, questions and brainstorming. The trainer presented the topics clearly and in a relaxed manner, which was very pleasant. She also left plenty of room to deal with questions.”
"A very active course that you can put to good use in practice. The trainer's open attitude gets a dialogue going."
“An interesting and instructive course, in which I picked up a lot of tips. I will certainly try to apply these tips.”
“I found the 'confrontational conversation skills and delivering bad news' course interesting. There is a theoretical grounding (general communication, communication specifically aimed at the 'roles' you can adopt in communication, the distinction between the questions 'do I have something to ask?' and 'do I have something to say?' when giving feedback, an explanation of the 4G model that you can apply in practice straight away, using INGE and LSD, etc.) and also a large practical element. That keeps the participants active. The role-play actor was experienced and responded well to the participants' input. The trainer is experienced and managed to put us at ease and offer a clear and safe environment, so that we could make good use of the training day to practise common situations from our own work. In the end we spent most of the time on confrontational conversation skills and less on delivering bad news, but we were given a number of useful pointers on that too.”
“2 excellent half-day sessions supported by a clear syllabus, but above all driven by your personal learning needs with practical exercises. Training with the actor is nerve-racking, but so instructive.”
“This really is a tailor-made course. Beforehand you speak directly with the trainer. That way you get to know the trainer in advance and your goals are discussed. These goals are then addressed during the course. It is an interactive course. The material is built up step by step, so that at the end of the day you go home feeling that you have genuinely learned something. Definitely recommended.”
“From a general point of view, this course made an excellent link with the specific tasks for which we wanted to take it.”
“I thought it was a good session, instructive and at a good pace. Sufficient attention was paid to the topics we had asked about, and time was taken for them. The trainer was also good, calmly explaining the topics we wanted to discuss. Thank you, Marco Schmidt, Reintegration Work Supervisor”
“A must for an effective competency-based interview!”
“An interesting and highly applicable course in the field of communication. A good refresher and made very applicable by the trainer, Job.”
“Despite its short duration, this course answered my question exactly. There was ample room for practice, relevant input and materials from the trainer, and it was delivered in a particularly pleasant atmosphere. A great deal of attention was paid to tailoring it to the participants' wishes, without losing direction. That makes the course itself an example of good conversation techniques/communication.”
"A very interesting, instructive and also enjoyable course that everyone can benefit from. The trainer also met all my expectations and managed to convey the material clearly, understandably, interactively and in an enjoyable, instructive way. An absolute must for anyone who wants to learn to communicate better."
“A very clarifying and useful course for learning to understand conversations or to conduct conversations in different ways. Learning to understand and become aware of what is happening or why something is happening. On top of that, it is a very pleasant and enjoyable interactive course that will definitely be worth your while.”
"The professionalism of the course leader (Roeli), the attention paid to personal learning objectives and the connection between participants meant that the conversation techniques course was experienced as highly positive."
"I had a pleasant training day on conducting PDP interviews. It was instructive, partly because we did exercises regularly, with the trainer stepping in at just the right moment. That way you were aware of what was happening. It was good that it was a small group, which meant there was real room to put forward specific questions and cases from your own organisation."
“I had initially signed up for a different course (Interview Techniques). During a conversation with Learnit Training, it turned out that this course also matched my needs well. They had judged that correctly. We were a small group, which meant the course could be tailored closely to our learning objectives. The trainer was very flexible; she adapted to our answers to questions. You could feel that she wanted to help you move forward. In my view she has a great deal of knowledge and expertise. I thoroughly enjoyed her sessions; she inspired me.”
“Very useful course with theory well applied in practical exercises!”
"Do you run into difficulties when it comes to communication? And do you want to develop yourself further in this area, so that you feel stronger in certain situations? Then the Conversation Techniques course is the right one. You learn to deal with situations you find difficult and gain new insights into how best to communicate. It gave me a lot of new and valuable insights."
“The course gave me insight into why I hold conversations the way I do and what I can do to break these patterns, and which techniques I can then use to become a better conversation partner.”
“I think everyone should take this course. I learned a lot of new things about communication. It also really held up a mirror to the things I do without being aware of them. That was certainly a good eye-opener.”
"Our trainer Steff was truly excellent! His approach is very refreshing and inspiring. The content was good."
"The content is instructive, but the trainer also makes it usable. With the course material alone you would certainly gain the knowledge, but to apply it you need guidance. Useful material that really benefits you and helps you find out how you come across and how you want to come across. Our trainer was excellent and listened to us in order to address our concerns."
"It was a thoroughly enjoyable course. The training was delivered with great enthusiasm and it was a pleasant setting. We were in a group of 3 participants, which worked very well for me. As a result, there was more scope to respond to your needs and provide personal guidance. We were able to cover a lot of topics. It was a good combination of theory and practice."
“The course material was expertly alternated with practical exercises. The trainer conveys the material to the participants in a professional and enthusiastic way. Because of the small number of participants, everyone had plenty of opportunity to take part. A course I would recommend.”
