Want to build your own website? In three days you learn to work with HTML and CSS, the two indispensable building blocks of every website. You practise directly in a hands-on way and build a solid foundation for developing websites independently.

Description

In this three-day HTML and CSS Basics course you work with the two building blocks that make up every website. You discover how HTML determines the content and structure of a page and how you use CSS to handle the design.

You work with an HTML editor and learn to set up a stylesheet yourself. Theory and practice alternate, so that you apply what you have learnt straight away to your own exercises. Topics such as semantic HTML, hyperlinks, images, responsive layouts, a contact form, search engine optimisation and validating and publishing your website are all covered.

The course follows the open learning format. This allows you to tailor the content, depth and pace to your own learning objectives. Afterwards, you will be able to build a website in HTML and CSS independently.

Topics

The following topics are covered during this three-day course:

  • The function and syntax of HTML and CSS
  • Setting up a website
  • The semantics of HTML
  • Working with hyperlinks, text and images
  • Adding design with CSS
  • Creating responsive layouts with CSS
  • Setting up a contact form
  • Search engine optimisation
  • Validating HTML and CSS and publishing them online

Because you work according to the Open Learning format, you match the content and depth of the topics to your own learning objectives and pace.

Result

After this course you can independently set up a complete website with HTML and CSS. You understand the semantics of HTML, add design with CSS and build responsive layouts that look good on every screen. You work with hyperlinks, text and images, set up a contact form and apply the basics of search engine optimisation. You also validate your code and publish your website online.

Target audience

This course is intended for anyone who wants to learn to build a website themselves and has little or no experience with HTML and CSS. Think of hobbyists who want to set up their own site, entrepreneurs who want to shape their online presence independently and novice web designers who want to lay a solid foundation.

Teaching method

You take this course in the Open Learning Format. This means you work at your own pace on assignments that match your learning objectives. An experienced trainer is present all day to guide you, answer questions and explain things where you need it.

Theory alternates with practical exercises, so that you apply what you have learned straight away in an HTML editor. Run into a problem? Then extra attention is given to it. You work with a clearly structured book with exercises and practice files, which you keep after the course as a reference work.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge for this course. Basic experience with a computer and the internet is sufficient. Are you interested in web development and would you like to learn how to build a website yourself? Then you can get started right away.

Comments

This course is taught in the Open Learning format. You work independently using a clear course book with exercises, at your own pace and at your own level. An experienced trainer is present throughout the day to guide you and answer questions.

Course format

This training is offered on the basis of our Open Learning teaching method. This means that you work independently, with active guidance from our trainer, to master the material. That way you can achieve your learning objectives at your own pace, without being held back by fellow participants working faster or slower. The trainer makes sure that you stay on schedule and meet your learning objectives. This form of learning leaves room for a tailored approach. You have the opportunity to bring in examples from your own practice and IT environment, so that your learning is even more specific. more...

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Frequently asked questions

The HTML and CSS Basics course lasts three days and is taught in the Open Learning Format. This means you work at your own pace and the content is tailored to your learning objectives. You alternate theory with practical exercises and receive personal guidance from an experienced trainer. In this way you work specifically on the topics that matter to you.

You do not need any programming experience for the HTML and CSS Basics course. Basic experience with computers and the internet is enough. The course is intended for beginners who want to learn to build their own website. You start from the basics and work step by step towards setting up a working website with HTML and CSS on your own.

In the HTML and CSS Basics course you learn to build websites independently, using HTML for the structure and CSS for the design. You work with an HTML editor, define your own stylesheet and create responsive layouts. Hyperlinks, images, a contact form, semantic HTML, search engine optimisation and validating and publishing your website online are also covered.

The HTML and CSS Basics course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn to build a website themselves and who has little or no experience with web development. Think of beginning hobbyists, entrepreneurs with their own site, marketers, content managers and those starting out in web design. You do not need programming experience. Basic computer skills and being comfortable with word processing are enough to keep up.

Yes, at the start of the HTML and CSS Basics course you receive a clearly structured book with exercises and practice files. You use this book during the course to practise with HTML and CSS straight away, and afterwards it serves as a handy reference work. The course works on both PC and Mac, so you can carry on using your own device.

Yes, the HTML and CSS Basics course can also be delivered in-company. In that case you receive the course at your organisation's premises, tailored to your team's learning objectives. The content remains the same: HTML, CSS, responsive layouts and publishing a website. Request a quotation via the course page for the options and available dates.

The HTML and CSS Basics course at Learnit takes three days and is delivered according to the Open Learning format. This means that you work at your own pace and the content is tailored to your learning objectives. An experienced trainer is present to answer questions and go through problems with you straight away. An online tutorial gives you theory and examples, but no personal feedback on your code. At Learnit you also receive a physical book with exercises and practice files, which serves as a reference work after the course. In addition, in three days you cover a complete learning path: from HTML semantics and CSS design to responsive layouts, a contact form, search engine optimisation and publishing your site online. Choose self-study if you have plenty of time and can keep going on your own. Choose this course if you want faster results with guidance.

After three days of HTML and CSS Basics, you can independently build a static website with semantic HTML, CSS styling and a responsive layout. That is exactly the foundation you need before going any further. A framework such as Bootstrap builds on knowledge of CSS: without an understanding of selectors, the box model and media queries, you use it as a black box. With WordPress you can start without code, but adapting themes still requires HTML and CSS. Rule of thumb: if, after this course, you can lay out and validate a simple portfolio page yourself, you are ready for the next step. Not sure? The Open Learning Format makes it possible to take a first step towards frameworks or a CMS during the course, tailored to your learning objectives.

Yes, that is possible. The HTML and CSS Basics course is taught according to the Open Learning format, which means the content, pace and depth are matched to your personal learning objectives. You can tell the trainer which website you want to build and where your sticking points lie. Theory alternates with practical exercises, so you apply what you learn directly to your own project. You work with an HTML editor and learn to define a stylesheet yourself. Compared with a classroom course with a fixed programme, you therefore have more scope to work on your specific question. Worth knowing: you learn the basics of HTML and CSS, so complex functionality such as a webshop with payments falls outside the scope of this course.

HTML and CSS are two separate languages that together form the basis of every website. HTML (HyperText Markup Language) determines the structure and content: headings, paragraphs, images, links and forms. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) determines the design: colours, fonts, spacing and the layout, including responsive behaviour on mobile and desktop. You learn them in the same course because in practice they are inextricably linked. A page without CSS looks like plain text, and CSS without HTML has nothing to style. In the three-day HTML and CSS Basics course at Learnit you work with an HTML editor and define a stylesheet yourself. That way you see straight away how a change in the CSS alters the presentation of your HTML structure, without having to adjust the content itself.

In 2025, HTML and CSS are still the fundamental building blocks of every website. Tools such as WordPress, Webflow, Wix and Shopify also generate HTML and CSS under the bonnet. As soon as you want to adapt a theme, build a custom block or fix a formatting error, you need this knowledge. Choose a no-code tool if you simply want to publish a standard site without any bespoke work. Choose the HTML and CSS Basics course if you want control over structure and design yourself, or if you want to move on later to JavaScript, frameworks or a developer role. The course lasts three days in the open learning format, in which you set your own pace and work with real code in an HTML editor.

The course is taught on PCs, but is also suitable for Mac users. During the course you work with an HTML editor in which you learn to define a StyleSheet yourself. Which editor you use is in principle up to you: popular choices are Visual Studio Code, Sublime Text or Notepad++ on Windows, and Visual Studio Code or Sublime Text on macOS. All three are free. You do not need a separate server or database, because HTML and CSS run directly in your browser. A modern browser such as Chrome, Firefox or Edge is enough to test your work. At the start you receive a book with exercises and practice files. That material works on both operating systems, and you can continue to use it afterwards as a reference work.
